New York City is great for photography.

It is hard to capture the essence of an area in just one photo. I have been experimenting with photo collages over the past 3 years. Thanks to the digital revolution, it is possible to take an unlimited amount of images.

I decided to take photos of the Broadway Theatre District. I would walk around the area on numenous occasions, both day and night, and take numerous images of Times Square, Broadway theatres, Marquees, landmarks, lights and other attractions.

Using photoshop, I put together the following collages to capture the feel of a neighborhood or theme.
After I choose a subject, I research the subject. I explore and read about the area. I use various guidebooks and maps and take a self tour of the area and decide what photos that I will need.

The first time I visit a subject, I spend hours walking around exploring and taking photos. I am aware of the time of day, The different lighting conditions, Is It sunny and bright? (lots of shadows?) Cloudy? (little or no shadows?) rain, snow, wind, the direction of the sun on various subjects. I would sometimes use a tripod at night for time exposures. I would edit the photos to see what I missed or what subject I would like to redo (maybe at a different time of day, better lighting?). I would return to the subject of the collage on numerous occassions, until I felt satisfied I had obtained all the images that I would need.
I visited Coney Island more than 10 times in 2007.
To capture the friday fireworks, I obtained access to the roof of the Luna Park Apartments across the street and took great firework photos.

The next step is picking the images and putting together the collage. The images have to be properly sized to fit in the collage. This is a time consuming process. My goal is to have a collage that captures the feel of the subject.

In time everything changes, It is said that nothing stays the same.
The 2008 season may have been the last for Astroland. The area is supposed to be redeveloped. I am glad I captured Coney Island in the collage. I have it hanging on the wall in my den. I get a nice feeling every time I look at it.
The same is true for my Broadway collages. Its amazing how many plays open and close every year. Starting in 2006, I have made a Broadway collage. If you are a Broadway Theatre fan, you will appreciate my collages. Its almost like stopping time and thats my goal.

I hope you enjoy the collages as much as I do. Tnanks, Steve
