The bottom part of the last rafter on the West side has been installed onto the Oculus. I was told that the last Rafter on the Church Street side of the Oculus would be installed in one piece. The other large Rafters were delivered in two sections and had to be welded together while on the ground and were raised up as one large Rafter. The plan was for the final Rafter to be raised up by the two huge cranes together along with a third crane on Church Street, in effect closing Church Street during the installation. The base of the last Rafter has a different larger base that makes the Rafter much heavier than the other Rafters. It was decided to raise the last Rafters on the East and West side would be raised up in two sections each. They would be raised up and bolted together. Then the sections will be welded together to make the two section into one large Rafter. Photo taken on 11-04-14.

This is the base of the last Rafter that was installed onto the Oculus in two sections. The last two rafters one on each side of the Oculus, had to be installed in two sections each. They are larger and heavier than the other Rafters. All other Rafters were assembled on the Ground. The last two Rafters had to be attached to each other, after first, the bottom (base) of the Rafter was installed. More than a week later, the upper section of the Rafter was raised up and installed onto the bottom section of the Rafter. Welding the Rafters together and onto the Oculus will take a couple of weeks. Photo taken on 12-05-14.

This is where the two sections of the last Rafter were installed to each other. Eight brackets are used to attach both sections together. Iron Workers will have to fill in the open area between the two sections, adding steel and welding and grinding to make it one seamless Rafter. Photo taken on 12-05-14.
